I approached my thesis research project with a focus on the psychology of consumption, with a focus on the way the brain reacts to consuming goods. This lead to the discovery that the brain reacts to shopping in the same was it reacts to addiction, which has lead to a lot of global mindless over consumption.

Even though sometimes we are aware of our little addictions, like drinking too many cups of coffee or treating ourselves to a little retail therapy at the end of a hard week, doesn’t mean it doesn’t have an effect on the way our brain perceives things.

My collection explores the idea of presenting something in a way that changes its role. It is a commentary on how we view things when they are presented as an art piece in a frame, or as a garment.

The collection consists of 6 pieces that can be presented flat in a frame or as garments. The pieces are inspired by the personal conscious addictions of the characters in my short film, as well as a personal self reflection.

The term ‘conscious consumption’ comes around a lot in the fashion industry, but it’s applicable in many different circumstances. It’s a buzzword with very little resonance behind it. Ironically the word ‘conscious’ doesn’t evoke much thought.

I then though about the cultural industries, think art galleries, theatre, poetry, etc, and how in elevated environments we allow ourselves to let the creations evoke emotions from us. And yet with fashion we often don’t think much further than ‘i want that.’ It got me thinking about changing the environment fashion may be perceived in, and how many that would allow ourselves to change the narrative and experience it more.

Short film

This short film will have no dialogue, and will be completely driven by sound effects and visuals. The film will showcase four, seemingly unconnected characters, experiencing their own personal addictions and coping mechanisms. Each individual scene corresponds to an art piece that showcases their addictions.
